Dr. Steven Stanley, Inventor of the RadBall, to Unveil Successful Real-World Test of the Innovative Radiation-Mapping Device at WM2010 Conference

Atlanta, GA (Vocus) March 3, 2010 -- After a successful six-month real-world test in an active cell environment at the U.S. Savannah River National Laboratory (http://srnl.doe.gov/). RadBall (http://www.nnl.co.uk/radball), a revolutionary radiation-mapping device, proves it is commercial-ready. Its inventor, Dr. Steven Stanley, will share highlights of the test and future plans for the device in Phoenix at WM2010 (http://www.wmsym.org/), the annual Waste Management Conference. UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (http://www.nnl.co.uk/facilities/british-technology-centre.html) and The North of England Agency (http://www.northengland.com/) host Stanley at this year’s conference.

The UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory focuses on delivering appropriate and innovative technologies into the UK’s £83bn ($132 million) nuclear decommissioning initiative in order to accelerate clean-up timescales or deliver improvements in safety. Stanley’s RadBall is the first in a line of innovative solutions the Laboratory expects to bring to market over the next couple of years. Stanley created RadBall as a safer, cheaper alternative to currently available technology for locating and quantifying radiation before beginning nuclear decommissioning work. In addition to the unique resources available within the research laboratory itself, he credits being located in Northwest England amongst a cluster of customers, suppliers and other researchers as key to the successful development of the RadBall product.

“The main market for all things nuclear in the UK is predominately in the Northwest of England,” says Stanley. “So in terms of having access to the market and the contacts with potential customers, being in the Northwest and the North of England absolutely, definitely is an advantage.”

England’s Northwest is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of nuclear facilities, a renowned skills base and world class expertise in nuclear technology research and development. The region contains half of the UK’s 45,000 highly skilled nuclear workers, several major nuclear sites, including Sellafield, the UK’s largest and most complex site, a well established supply chain and the UK’s main center for nuclear research.

The Northwest will also be at the center of the UK’s nuclear new build program, which will lead to the commissioning of approximately 16GW of new nuclear generating capacity by 2025, involving construction of around 10 – 12 reactors. Strategic regional assets, such as Springfields Fuel’s nuclear fuel manufacturing operation; Westinghouse UK; and Urenco, a leading global provider of enriched uranium and associated technologies, will form the bedrock of the UK’s nuclear renaissance. The recently announced Centre for Nuclear Technology (C-NET), based at the University of Manchester, will further enhance the region’s leadership in reactor technology. This, together with its formidable range of nuclear assets, skills base and research centers will maintain the Northwest‘s position as one of the world’s largest centers of nuclear expertise.
